Pablo Larraín is charmed by tragic female characters. After his enquire about the controversial figure of Jacqueline Bouvier, aka Jackie Kennedy, the widow of the President of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy. As he did for Jackie, he chose to tell the story of Diana Spencer in a defined time and space. Just a weekend, the one that brought the sad princess to divorce from an entire kingdom, but not from its servants. Because Lady D was a revolutionary, the bug in the perfect and age-old system of Britsh monarchy.

«We all grew up understanding what a fairytale is» says the Chilean director who comes back to Venice two years later being in competition with the reggaeton almost musical Ema. He continues saying that «Diana Spencer changed the paradigm, and the idealised icons that pop culture creates, forever. This is the story of a princess who decided not to become a queen but chose to build her identity by herself. It’s an upside-down fairytale». 

Icona pop all’inizio della sua carriera è stata anche Kristen Stewart was an early icon of the contemorary pop culture because of her role in the Twilight saga. Something she wanted to forget once the franchise ended, including unveiling the marketing strategy that wanted her and Robert Pattinson as a couple. Nowadays Kristen is a muse of arthouse directors Olivier Assayas, Woody Allen and David Cronenberg, she is working in his latest film Crimes of the Future.

After Jean Seberg, Spencer is another free and tormented woman and she definitely the actress that can understand how is being prisoner. Spencer has a royal cast, starting from Jack Farthing (he’s also one of the protagonist of The Lost Daughter) as Prince Charles. Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Golden Lion in 2016) Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible), Amy Mansing, Timothy Spall and Olga Hellsing who plays Sarah Ferguson.
