The chance of the Festival

Today starts the decade of excellence for our cinema. The 79th Venice Film Festival, the most prestigious international film festival, will magnetize worldwide attention. We are all waiting for movies such as Blonde, about the myth of Marilyn, the great masters Alejandro G. IñárrituDarren AronofskyFlorian ZellerNoah BaumbachLars Von TrierNicolas Winding Refn, the two latter authors of two series, confirming the fall of the barrier between cinema and art-house series. We also have the weight of a massive Italian production supported by post-Covid Tax Credit, but sadly these movies did not find the same audience collected by the blockbusters made in Hollywood in the last few months. There are many of the best Italian directors in Venice this year. As usual. Luca GuadagninoGianni AmelioPaolo Virzì, the revenant Emanuele Crialese, Susanna Nicchiarelli, the outsider Andrea Pallaoro and promising young directors in the collateral sections (one above all: Pippo Mezzapesa, his surprising Ti mangio il cuore is selected in Orizzonti) promise to stand comparison with directors from all over the world. This competition will continue in theatres where our film industry desperately needs to appeal to the audience again to avoid an unpredictable crisis. Venice Film Festival will promote this coming back to theatres. It succeeded in 2021 before the stop caused by the last Covid wave. The Artistic Director Alberto Barbera, supported by President of Biennale Roberto Cicutto, composed a festival full of suggestions, bravely tuned with the dramatic moment the world is living among wars, crises and the outbreak of the pandemic. The Festival chose to tell these stories and not ignore them. The event also regains possession of locations and traditions (the red carpet is open to fans again), opens new space, and attracts glamour and discussions like before Covid. 56 countries, 11 American movies, 17 from France. Venice Film Festival is excellence to promote and preserve. Even because it gives a great opportunity to the Italian film industry, it would be incredibly wrong not to catch it.
