LITTLE JAFFNA
SIC – Special Event Closing Film
World Premiere
Id., France, 2024. Directed by Lawrence Valin. Starring Lawrence Valin, Puviraj Raveendran, Vela Ramamoorthy. Running time 1h 40′.
The 39th International Film Critics’ Week closes with the out-of-competition feature Little Jaffna, which director and actor Lawrence Valin (César nominee for the short The Loyal Man) has taken from his 2018 short film. We are in the Tamil community of the Parisian neighbourhood that gives the film its title, and young policeman Michael is tasked with infiltrating a gang that practices extortion and money laundering on behalf of Sri Lankan separatists. ‘Popular cinema with a proud soul, with a political and civil afflatus that never loses its taste for entertainment,’ defined SIC Director and General Delegate Beatrice Fiorentino. SIC@SIC also ends with the short film (also out of competition) Domenica sera by Matteo Tortone.
