TROIS AMIES
France, 2024 Director Emmanuel Mouret Starring Camille Cottin, Sara Forestier, India Hair, Vincent Macaigne Distribution Pyramide International
Trois Amies, the first of the three French films in the official selection of Venice 81, is the story of love affairs that intersect and intertwine. Emmanuel Mouret is a director from Marseilles who is little known in Italy but much loved by transalpine critics, especially for his last two films, Les Chosesqu’onn dit, les Chosesqu’onn fait (2020) and A Passionate Affair (2022).
Described as a ‘‘seemingly light comedy that speaks volumes about the fleeting nature of modern love feelings’’, Trois Amies is a film that artistic director Alberto Barbera ‘‘wanted at all cost’’ for its being a sort of ronde between Rohmer and Woody Allen with references to the French tradition going back to Marivaux, Diderot and Choderlos de Laclos.
Joan (India Hair), Alice (Camille Cottin) and Rebecca (Sara Forestier) are three friends with different perceptions of love. The first is disenchanted and decides to leave her partner and the father of her daughter. On the other hand, the second advocates a marriage of convenience. She has no problem carrying on a relationship devoid of love but full of tenderness, which is more reassuring than passion for her. Very different is the approach of Rebecca, their mutual friend, who sees love as an adventure and hides a secret affair with Alice’s partner. Three women with different temperaments defend their convictions and vindicate their choices.
