A father and a daughter. Cinema and life. Out of competition at the Venice Film Festival comes Il tempo che ci vuole, Francesca Comencini’s most personal and touching film, which investigates the bond with her father, the great director Luigi Comencini (Marcellino pane e vino, Un ragazzo di Calabria, Incompreso, Le avventure di Pinocchio).
Relying on the intense performances of Fabrizio Gifuni and Romana Maggiora Vergano, Comencini reconstructs some crucial stages of her life, a fairytale childhood tainted in adolescence by drug addiction. In the background, the dramatic events of the Italian ‘Anni di Piompo’ in Italy, with all the revolutionary illusions of young people and massacres that are still unsolved cases. ‘This film is a personal account of moments with my father that emerged from memories and remained vivid and intact in my mind,’ said Francesca Comencini. – Through my story, I want to tell the downfall of every teenager: when the fairytale cracks, you become an ungainly and rebellious person, and you feel you are a disappointment’. 26-year-old Romana Maggiora Vergano is young Francesca. She was the daughter of Paola Cortellesi in the incredible Italian hit There’s Still Tomorrow. ‘I discovered that being directed by the film’s real protagonist is a priceless experience,’ the actress told Ciak. ‘During the filming, I tried to keep maximum listening and respect for her vision, making Francesca’s suggestions and experiences my own. It was a revelatory journey, and having Fabrizio Gifuni beside me was a privilege’.
