Lodo Guenzi: Venice, cinema and today’s tragicomic world

Lodo Guenzi from Lo Stato Sociale is in Venice for EST- Last Minute Dictatorship. Louise-Michel, a story of fired French workers, is one of his favorite movies, but «the real one is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles».

Film debut: why now?
I thought I would never made movies. Max Croci wanted me in a film, sadly he passed away, but it was his idea at first. During the tour for the album The Cherry Orchard, we met some agencies in Rome and the proposal arrived.

Is irony an effective way to tackle difficult issues?
Of course. Irony is one of the few things allowed for effective communication right now, because it’s all in a nutshell, judgment is biased: if one makes you laugh, listen to him at least. Curon’s protagonist Alessandro Tedeschi, who attended my academy, said: «The world is divided in two: who makes you laugh and who doesn’t make you laugh».

The movie is about the decline of dictatorships in Eastern Europe. Does the condition of young people in Europe improved or worsened today?
Once the wall collapsed, the hypothesis collapsed that it was heaven on one side and everything was wrong on the other, even though we know the terrible things they were doing there. I belong to the first generation born in the perception that another way of life cannot exist. It hurts, it’s claustrophobic.

What about the Festival at the time of Covid?
I think it works. There are less curious, but the crowd attracted by stardom is the least interesting thing about the Festival, just like people under the hotels in Sanremo. It would be nice to have more crowded theaters, but the important thing is meeting from all over the world, see other people’s works, have a collective sense of doing things. It’s quite different from a huge gig.

An Academy Award between farce and tragedy

Jim Broadbent arrived at the Lido to present The Duke, a comedy directed by Roger Michell in which the English Oscar winner (supporting actor in Iris) shares the scene with Helen Mirren. «We were in a movie together once, but never in the same scene. Magnificent actress, she has completely immersed herself in the role, showing her age without problems».

Broadbent plays the man who stole a Goya from the National Gallery in 1961 asking for ransom the abolition of tv license for the elderly. A true story «I didn’t know anything about until I got the script, one of the best I’ve read in recent years. A real character, an old-fashioned chauvinist who, however, stands for the weak ones. A man who can shamelessly lie to his wife, but who loves her sincerely»

A comedy full of values that the UK is in great need of in the era of Covid and Brexit. «It is deeply depressing. Mistakes were made and the situation got worse and worse. People will become more and more angry and frustrated, unemployment and problems will increase. I hope something good will come out going forward, now it’s bleak. Thankfully this movie emphasizes the benefits of sharing, kindness and identifying with the other rather than just being selfish. If we were able to drive this message at least a little, it would already be a little help».

“The Label Accident”, Georgina Rodriguez, the pricetag is wrong!

Maybe she was a bit distracted by Venice Film Festival glamour and paparazzis. Georgina Rodriguez forgot to remove the pricetag from her white dress. A label accident that can happen while facing the frenetic pace of Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica. The partner of Cristiano Ronaldo already left Venice by the way. Maybe she had to give the dress back to her sponsor.

Elisa Fuksas: The more we talk to each other, the better we perform

Elisa Fuksas presents iSola at Venice Days, a film shot with a mobile phone about illness (her own and of a friend) and lockdown.

Telling stories through art could a way to reconnect with others?
It’s happening now: I’m vaguely realizing that the film is an object that exists and can be seen. I haven’t realized it so far, because I’ve only worked with people very close to me, the editor and the producers. I protected myself or I would never have made it.

In your movies you have already touched the relationship between new technologies and people’s lives. What is your idea about the role of these devices?
Mobile saved my life. It was my crew, my cinematographer, my producer, my friend. I do not see anything demonic in this strange object, truly mysterious especially when it is off. In the contrary, I think it’s a possibility.

Your novel Love and do what you want tells events prior to iSola. Did the writing and making of the film influence each other?
My days were cleaning, finishing the novel and filming myself without knowing why. Then the book grew inside me for sure while filming. When I wrote the narrative voice of the movie, the tone is similar to the book, as if it had moved away from the paper.

You have touched different languages in your path. Can the dialogue between the arts relaunch culture?
In my opinion the more we are, the more we talk to each other and the more we perform. I’d like to start making choral films divided in episodes, a kind of format we were incredibly good at. I think it is essential to start talking to each other again, and to be less afraid of others.

Verheyen: «We must boost and protect our heritage»

«Europe has an incredibly rich cultural heritage that we must boost and protect» Sabine Verheyen (Presidente of the Committee on Culture and Education) said yesterday at Italian Pavillion during the meeting Audiovisiul as key industry for the growth of Europe. Massimiliano Smeriglio (MEP) participated with a videomessagge.
