Movie of the day: America Latina, three questions to Elio Germano

Il quinto film italiano in concorso è l'opera terza dei Fratelli D'Innocenzo, con protagonista Elio Germano

The mystery of a movie often starts from its title. Such as America Latina, that land near the sea south from Rome that once was a swamp. The quiet dentist Massimo Sisti works and lives here in a beautiful villa far from the madding crowd, an oasis of happiness where he watches her daughters growing up with his wife Alessandra. Everything’s perfect. But… D’Innocenzo Brothers know the rules of the game and of genres. Their first two movies are a clear statement of their idea of cinema and this is the reason why they «chose to tell this story because caused us a crisis as human beings, storytellers and moviegoers».

This crisis convinced the Artistic Director and the programmers of Venice 78 to pick America Latina for the official competition. This is the first time for D’Innocenzos in Venice and they will run for the Golden Lion with Elio Germano as their lead actor again after Favolacce.

This is the day of America Latina at Venezia 78. What do you think about this year’s festival?

I’ve just arrived then I haven’t tasted anything and when your movie is in competition it’s impossible to watch movies. I’m happy that there are five Italian movies in competition and this year’s selection seems very good, I haven’t seen any of the movies but I read very good critics. It really looks being a celebration and a festival, especially for the film industry that suffered a lot in the last year and a half. Time has not been wasted, because many good and important movies have been produced during this period and let’s hope that the audience will come back to theatres to help them.

You’ve been to all the major film festivals, Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Which is your favourite?

They all have different identities and different ways of being a festival. This is my third time competing in Venice.

Which kind of movie is America Latina? Is it very different from  Favolacce?

Definitely yes sì, because they don’t care about the standard, they always want new prototypes. Their cinema is not the clone of something else, not even for their own. This freedom is amazing. You don’t care about the result because the important thing is making research.
