Lido’s Chronicle

The Last Duel,

Matt Damon (co-write – actor): «We tried to get the rights of The Last Duel in 2011 but were not availabe. When I read the book my first thought was Ridley, he’s the best telling this age. Once we got the rights, Ben and I started talking about the movie and we asked Nicole Holofcenerl to join us in the writing process, she worked mostly on Marguerite’s character and on the third act».

Ben Affleck (co-write – actor): «I consider myself a feminist. The Last Duel has been extremely moving for me because of Marguerite and her extraordinary strength. She’s a perfect female character for a story to tell: she’s strong, she takes risks and she looks for justice. I hope the audience feels hope, compassion and empathy for the condition women were forced at that time. We didn’t want to be scholastic, this is the reason why we asked Nicole her point of view.

Ridley Scott (Director and producer): «AMatt Damon called me around Christmas 2018, he proposed me to read the script. We worked very well together for The Martian, I could not refuse and after that thins moved on quite fast».

Jodie Comer (Actress): «The most exciting thing was talking about my character with Nicole, Matt and while they were writing the script, they wanted me to give my opinion about the character. Playing Marguerite has been great but also difficult because of the many points of view: The thing that interested me most was bringing on screen such a special perspective».

Tornatore on Ennio: a «transparent» Maestro

Giuseppe Tornatore (Credits La Biennale di Venezia – Foto ASAC Zucchiatti)

«Ennio told himself in a transparent way», says Giuseppe Tornatore presenting out of competition the documentary dedicated to his friend and artistic partner, Ennio MorriconeEnnio is the title of a movie that intersects the storytelling of Morricone himself in conversation with the director with archive materials and interviews. Combining these three elements was fundamental, Tornatore explains. «It was the crucial element: find the key to combine these materials with harmony and logic. The answer was music» that is used in the movie like a «storytelling grid».

Storytelling that proceeds chronologically: «Because» the director continues «it seemed to be the best thing to tell Ennio’s life almost as a novel, in the easiest way. Those who will continue the opera of research about Ennio can use this movie as reference». Tornatore says that movies should be distributed «in schools, archives and libraries».

«We were sure that the only person that was able to tell Ennio Morricone was Giuseppe Tornatore» said Gabriele Costa, producer of the movie with Gianni Russo who added that «during the production, we discovered many unknown things about Ennio». Tornatore is quite sure that «no one will be able to put together Ennio’s whole opera» given his huge production. «I think he was never convinced of his greatness» the director continues talking about Morricone who defines «a very simple man and at the same time out of ordinary».
