MARCIA SU ROMA

World Premiere

Italy, 2022 – Director Mark Cousins – With Alba Rohrwacher – Distribution I Wonder Pictures – Running Time 1h e 37’

A hundred years after the rise of the fascist regime in Italy, while the threat of authoritarian nationalism in Europe is far from being averted, the opening of Venice Days is the special screening of Marcia su Roma. The famous documentarist Mark Cousins (The Story of Film) evokes the subversive march that took place on October 28 1922 and reflects on the mechanisms of manipulation of truth used by political propaganda through filmmaking. Marcia su Roma, as the director himself says, is a documentary about «the culture of images» and how much «could be horrible while serving power and assassins. But the movie also unveils the greatness of cinema when it is used with an open heart». Marcia su Roma is a produced by Palomar in collaboration with Il Saggiatore and CSC. Cousins makes use of the participation of Alba Rohrwacher in the role of Anna, a woman who represents the feeling of the larger part of the Italian people at that time, seduced by the Mussolinian storytelling that was spoiled by the cruel reality.

DIRTY, DIFFICULT, DANGEROUS

Opening Film, World Premiere

France, Italy, Lebanon, 2022 – Director Wissam Charaf – With Clara Couturet, Ziad Jallad, Rifaat Tarabeym, Darina Al Joundi, Kawsie Chandra – Running Time 101’

Director and screenwriter Wissam Charaf brings us again to contemporary Beirut after the very good Tombé du ciel (2016), the story of the consequences of the coming back of Samir, a former soldier presumed dead 20 years earlier. Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous is the contrasted love story of two young lovers looking for the lightness of passion in an almost collapsed Lebanon.

Ahmed (Ziad Jallad) is a Syrian refugee, Mehdia (Clara Couturet), is an Ethiopian immigrant caregiver. She tries to emancipate herself from the job centre that blackmails her, while Ahmed tries to survive trading second-hand iron components and is afflicted by a mysterious illness. Their story seems futureless, but they have nothing to lose, so they decide to roll the dice and leave Beirut together.
