Movie of the day: White Noise

After the success of Marriage Story which was presented in Venice in 2019 and got 5 Oscar-nomination, including best supporting actress Laura Dern who won her first Academy Award, Noah Baumbach is back on the Lido to open Venezia 79 with White Noise. Adam Driver teams for the fifth time with the New York director as the protagonist of this story focused on relationships and family based upon the novel by Don DeLillo.

White Noise is the story of Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitlerian studies who lives in a town in the Midwest with his fourth wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their children. The comforting life of Jack and his family is shaken by an accident that produces a lethal toxic cloud that surrounds their area. The event makes all the protagonists face “the universal mysteries of love and death and the chance of happiness in an uncertain world”.

Baumbach did an original, ambitious and exciting film that works on different levels. It’s a drama, but also a satire, very ironic artistic director Alberto Barbera saidThe final result is a movie that examines our obsessions, the doubts and the fears of the ’80s with clear references to our contemporary society”.

White Noise is the third collaboration between Baumbach and Netflix. The streaming service produced the film and from Venice the road will probably arrive at the Oscars, just like already happened to Cuaron’s Roma and Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God.
