Ann Hui, Leone d’oro alla carriera along with Tilda Swinton, came at Lido bringing her new feature at Venezia 77 out of competition. Love After Love is based on the first short novel by Eileen Chang. Young Ge Weilong leaves Shangai heading to Hong Kong in pursuit of her education. She asks her aunt Mrs Liang for help, but she gradually turns Weilong in her puppet to lure rich and powerful men.
Love After Love is a sophisticated period melò enriched by extraordinary collaborations. Oscar winner (Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Emperor) Ryuichi Sakamoto is the author of the beautiful soundtrack, while cinematographer Christopher Doyle (Wong Kar-wai’s favourite) used his talent behind camera. Legendary Emi Wada (Academy Award winner for Akira Kurosawa’s Ran) designed the gorgeous costumes. Love After Love is an outstanding production and paired with Mrs Hui presence at Lido is an actual gift for this Festival of Renaissance.
