How to get away with festival

Making a film festival. There are so many festivals around Italy and around the world, it is crystal clear that it must be a very simple thing to do.

Guess what? It’s not.

A festival is based on very fragile balance, a bit like Mont Blanc in Nanni Moretti’s Bianca. And like that cake, you don’t have to dig the tunnel.

A film festival must have solid foundations. As always, there must a be a team works coordinated towards a single goal to arrive at the end of the championship.

This team must be led by an executive director who knows how to make meatloaf with corn flakes, because budget is never enough.

The artistic director must trust the executive and this case the trust is tripled, because Taormina Film Festival 2021 has a triumvirate at the helm of the program.

Putting all these elements together means making a beautiful festival, always facing inevitable last-minute setbacks, tragedies, disasters, but also pleasant and unexpected surprises.

The 67th edition of the Taormina Film Festival has been a very good festival, because there’s the common will, strength, desire to go beyond any obstacle and financial limitation.

The group set defined goals.

Bringing a great event back on the territory after the pandemic, recreating a cultural economic texture.

Done.

Bringing talents in attendance, including big names of Italian cinema industry and even international ones.

Done.

Giving a new film festival setting, with few films but many souls.

Done.

If all these items have been checked off the bucket list, it is because there is a long term project. The real strength of any event is planning.

Taormina Film Festival has a plan. This year the team had the organizational and artistic intelligence to modulate the event according to the special needs of this peculiar historical moment. The team got to know each other, tested its potential and is ready for next year.

If good morning starts in the morning, Taormina 68 will get away with the perfect festival.
