Journey at the end of Long Day

Long Day is the debut feature of Chinese director Yumo Luo. Shot in a magnificent black and white, the movie tells the stories of simple individuals facing the struggle of living on a single winter day in the suburbs of Beijing.

«The idea of Long Day traced back to 2003. In the summer of that year, I saw a news that a mother who had a drug addiction for theft was arrested while she was stealing. The three-year-old girl starved to death. This news event has given me a deep memory. This story is the prototype of the mother and daughter in the film. Many years later, I met a lot of things and they all became the intertwined characters  in this movie. These are memories of the past and I see them in black and white».

Long Day does not have a linear narrative structure.

«During the shooting process, I broke up the structure. There is only one point in the spiritual core of the film, which is the common mental state of these characters: Where do we go in the numb life?»

Long Day is a movie made of emotions recreating the perfectly the alienating existence of contemporary in a Chinese metropolis, a no bound wandering waiting for something that unlikely will improve their lives.

Yumo Luo is a filmmaker already with a very personal view and style at his first movie. A little discovery of Taormina Film Festival 2021, a name that very soon will be chased from the most important international festivals.
