Sono ben 167 i titoli eleggibili, nella prima fase, per la categoria Miglior Documentario alla 96ª edizione dei Premi Oscar. Alcuni di questi film non sono ancora usciti nelle sale, ma dovranno soddisfare questo requisito e rispettare tutte le altre regole di qualificazione per poter avanzare nel processo di votazione.

Sono ammessi alla categoria anche i documentari che hanno già vinto un premio ad un festival cinematografico o che sono stati presentati nella categoria lungometraggi internazionali come selezione ufficiale del loro Paese. I film presentati nella categoria Miglior Documentario possono anche qualificarsi per gli Academy Awards in altre categorie, tra cui quella del Miglior Film.
A votare la rosa dei candidati sono i membri del Documentary Branch, che il 21 dicembre scremeranno la lista a 15 nomi. Nella longlist che vi mostriamo qua di seguito attenzione agli italiani In Viaggio di Gianfranco Rosi e Umberto Eco – La biblioteca del mondo di Davide Ferrario.
Ottimi candidati a rimanere nella quindicina di dicembre (e non solo) sono i documentari su Michael J.Fox e Sylvester Stallone, rispettivamente Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (già vincitore di 5 Critics Choice Documentary Awards) e Sly.
