In attesa di scoprire (domani alle ore 11) il destino del Concorso ufficiale di Venezia 80, il Toronto International Film Festival lancia il primo forte segnale con la line-up dell’edizione 2023, in programma dal 7 al 17 settembre.
Alexander Payne, Richard Linklater, Marco Bellocchio, Kore-eda Hirokazu e Justine Triet sono tra gli autori che presenteranno le loro ultime opere al festival. Payne sarà presente con The Holdovers, una commedia ambientata in un collegio che lo riunisce con la star di Sideways Paul Giamatti, mentre Linklater presenterà Hitman, una commedia d’azione con Glen Powell e Adria Arjona. Direttamente da Cannes, Kore-eda e Triet presenteranno Monster e Anatomy of a Fall, rispettivamente miglior sceneggiatura e Palma d’oro dell’ultima edizione, mentre ci sarà anche un po’ di Italia con Marco Bellocchio e il suo Rapito.
In totale saranno 60 i film presentati, in rappresentanza di 70 paesi del mondo. Mancano, come prevedibile, i grandi titoli che tutti si aspettavano prima dello sciopero, da Dune: Parte o Il colore viola, per citarne due. Ciò non vuol dire però che il TIFF sarà privo di anteprime importanti. Oltre ai già citati titoli, al festival saranno proiettati Dumb Money di Craig Gillespie, una commedia drammatica sulla spremuta di GameStop della Sony con Seth Rogen e Paul Dano, e diversi film di Netflix come Rustin di George C. Wolfe, Pain Hustlers di David Yates e Nyad di Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi e Jimmy Chin. Apple porterà anche Flora and Son, un dramma musicale del regista di Sing Street John Carney, dopo averlo acquistato dal Sundance per 20 milioni di dollari.
A Toronto sono stati ufficializzati, seppur senza ancora una casa di produzione alle spalle, Lee con Kate Winslet nei panni della fotografa Elizabeth “Lee” Miller e il dramma di sopravvivenza di Jodie Comer The End We Start From.

Il programma prevede anche diversi film di registi noti per il loro lavoro come attori, tra cui Michael Keaton (Knox Goes Away), Chris Pine (Poolman), Anna Kendrick (Woman of the Hour) e Viggo Mortensen (The Dead Don’t Hurt). Ethan Hawke porterà la sua ultima fatica registica Wildcat, che vede protagonista la figlia Maya Hawke nel ruolo della scrittrice Flannery O’Connor.
