GOD IS A WOMAN

SIC – Special Event – Opening Film

world premiere, first feature

Dieu est une femme, France/Switzerland/Panama, 2023. Directed by Andrés Peyrot Duration 1h 25‘.

“A manifesto film: theoretical, aesthetic, political.” This is how Beatrice Fiorentino, General Delegate of the 38th International Critics’ Week, defines God Is a Woman, Andrés Peyrot’s debut feature film that opens the autonomous and parallel section of the Venice Film Festival out of competition. At its centre is a documentary about the Kuna people that Oscar-winning French filmmaker Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau was shooting in Panama in 1975. The project had remained unfinished due to running out of funds. But since the discovery of the footage, Peyrot, Fiorentino anticipates, “scores an exciting reflection on the responsibility of filmmaking, on belonging, on the sense of community,” in a debut feature that “decolonizes the gaze and reasons about the power of the image.” Also kicking off SIC@SIC shorts with the special event Incontro di notte by Liliana Cavani, made when the director (Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement this year) was studying at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.
