The Brutalist by Brady Corbet wins the UNIMED Price

The jury of 18 students of the Union of Mediterranean Universities crowned The Brutalist. Brady Corbet’s film received the UNIMED prize, which is dedicated to the film that best showcases the concepts of diversity and intercultural exchange as seen through the lens of young people. ‘It is a film that embodies the fundamental principles we promote and the themes we feel close to us,’ explained a jury representative. ‘The dialogue between different cultures, the fight against racism and discrimination, the analysis of the roots of violence and current conflicts. The Brutalist courageously tackles topics such as anti-Semitism, the experience of migration and the brutal dynamics of capitalism‘.

The jury’s announcement, the only example of the involvement of university students at an international festival of this scale, was attended by the Biennale’s programmer Alessandra Speciale and several university lecturers, including Marco Bertozzi, film historian, Angelo Maggi, professor of History of Architecture and Photographic Representation at Iuav, Maria Roberta Novielli, professor of Film Making at Ca’ Foscari University, and Gianni Celata, professor of Media Economy at Dams of Roma Tre University. It was also present Flavio Natalia, Chief editor of Ciak, who emphasised the importance of the link between the Film Festival and young university students, who are often able to intercept the sentiment around the films presented and, not infrequently, anticipate the titles deserving more attention over time.

On the other hand, the coordinator of the award, Prof. Antonio Falduto of UNINT Rome, emphasised UNIMED’s commitment to encouraging an increasing participation of non-European students, who will be increasingly invited to participate in the jury’s formation in future years. The UNIMED prize was created by the Italian-Serbian artist Milija Čpajak and presented by the international curator and gallerist Nataša Radojević. In light of the award received, The Brutalist will be presented at various universities in the Mediterranean area and introduced by the director, Brady Corbet, or a cast representative.
