In the competition of the 38th International Critics’ Week, it is time for Italy with About Last Year, the doc by Dunja Lavecchia, Beatrice Surano and Morena Terranova that chronicles a year in the lives of 20-year-olds Celeste, Giorgia and Letizia. In the suburbs of Turin, the three find a space of freedom in the context of ballrooms, where cisgender women like them are traditionally considered guests. But “now, especially in Italy, things are changing,” the directors explain, so “making this documentary means sending a cultural and social message, beyond prejudice and stereotypes.” For SIC General Delegate Beatrice Fiorentino, the film is also “a coming of age, a song to life” and an example of “pure, free and fiercely independent cinema.” Among the SIC@SIC shorts, on the other hand, we have Pinoquo by Federico Demattè.
