AGGRO DR1FT
Out of competition
Usa, 2023, Director Harmony Korine, Starring Jordi Mollà, Travis Scott, Joshua Tilley, Stet Blancett, Chanya Middleton, Running time 80′
We recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of Spring Breakers, which won the Future Film Festival Digital Award special mention in 2013 (the same one that went to Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo on the Cliff in 2008). Now Harmony Korine is back to the Lido, delighting his many fans. This time, he’s Out of Competition with the indefinable Aggro Dr1ft. “I don’t think there was anything like that, I don’t think I made anything like that. I don’t know if there was anything like that,” said the 50-year-old California director. – We were trying not to make a movie, so maybe it’s not even a movie.” After Gummo‘s 1997 Critics Week debut and 1999’s Julien Donkey-Boy, this time he needs little more than an hour to subvert all predictions. For that matter, until the premiere based only on a couple of stills confirming its fully infrared photography and a synopsis only slightly less surreal than the commentary released at the Biennial by the director, anticipating “Fierce Days, Fierce Nights” and “Something New on the Horizon… An Ode to the Aggressive Wanderer.” That could be the tormented assassin protagonist, played by Jordi Mollà, at the centre of a “feverish” and delirious mélange “of skulls and swords, masks and machine guns, strippers and mobsters, horned demons and fantastic machines.” It is a psychedelic journey into a twisted world where violence and madness reign unchallenged and where predator and prey mingle. Also in the film is rapper Travis Scott, for whom Korine directed along with Gaspar Noé and Nicolas Winding Refn – the Circus Maximus, available for free online.
