There is talk of trauma, childhood pain, love, family and duplicity in Hoard, the debut feature by London-based Luna Carmoon in competition at the 38th International Critics’ Week. Representing, in the words of General Delegate Beatrice Fiorentino, “a new way forward for British cinema,” which will also be competing at this year’s SIC with Moin Hussain’s Sky Peals. Carmoon’s film, Fiorentino said, is “unsettling and overwhelming,” moving between “tenderness and disgust,” magical realism and echoes of 1960s and 1970s British cinema, particularly the work of Nicolas Roeg and Ken Russell. The SIC@SIC competition also continues with the short film The Terminator Line by Gabriele Biasi.
