THE VOURDALAK

SIC – In Competition

Id., France, 2023. Director Adrien Beau. With Kacey Mottet Klein, Ariane Labed, Grégoire Colin, Vassili Schneider, Claire Duburcq. Running Time 1h e 30’.

There are a lot of vampires at the Venice Film Festival this year, and International Critics’ Week makes no exception. The Vourdalak, which runs in the competition, is the debut movie by French director Adrien Beau (also a stage director, visual artist and author of short films), inspired by a short novel by Lev Tolstoy. The film recounts the journey of a young marquis to the land of the bloodthirsty undead of the same name. The result, anticipated SIC General Delegate Beatrice Fiorentino, is a film (shot in 16mm) that is “ancient and contemporary,” between cinephile references and the death of patriarchy. For the SIC@SIC competition, it is the turn of Lorenzo Quagliozzi’s short film De l’amour perdu.
