Life Is Not a Competition but I’m Winning takes a stand against discrimination in sports. Julia Fuhr Mann’s debut feature competes at this year’s International Critics Week. In the film, a collective of queer athletes enter the Olympic Stadium in Athens to celebrate those excluded from the chance to win. Thus, we meet transgender marathon runner Amanda Reiter, who faced prejudice from sports organizers, and 800-meter athlete Annet Negesa, urged by international federations to undergo hormone surgery. “An alien object,” said SIC General Delegate Beatrice Fiorentino, where “images from today and yesterday rewrite the official sports narrative that wants athletes to be winners or losers.” In the short competition SIC@SIC, there’s We Should All Be Futurists by Angela Norelli.
